5 Reasons you shouldn’t ignore a Toothache

Most of us choose to ignore our toothache in the fear that dental treatment itself will cause more discomfort than the existing toothache. Well, this attitude couldn’t be further away from the truth! A toothache is a warning to check our oral health.

5 reasons why you shouldn’t ignore a toothache:

  1. There is always a reason for a toothache: A dental pain is never to be ignored. It’s our body’s way of telling us, something is wrong and our cue to take action. Never leave it thinking it is something that will resolve on its own, it only gets worse.
  2. Cavities cause pain: When a tooth develops a cavity, it irritates the nerves and tissues right in the centre of the tooth. If not promptly treated, it can cause infection gradually destroying the tooth.
  3. Advance gum disease: Gum diseases are another reason for toothaches and are unnoticed till the advanced stage. Gum disease is often known as the ‘silent killer’ and if left to progress, exposes the root of the tooth leading to extraction. It is important to get an early diagnosis and treatment of a gum disease.
  4. Cracked tooth: Sometimes, teeth break without having a cavity or any other problem. This can cause a toothache. Ignoring a cracked tooth can lead to decay and more pain. It is important to address the same and get the cracked tooth removed.
  5. Abscess or infection: An abscess or an infection is a result of several toothaches being ignored for a prolonged period of time. This can cause severe pain and swelling around the affected tooth. There are three remedies to this, incision, root canal and if it’s too severe, extraction is the last resort.

Don’t ignore toothaches, visit your dentist promptly. Your teeth are special and unique, nurture them.

Toothaches can be a signal of underlying sinus problems, heart attacks and diabetes. Watch for the warnings, take action. Take care.
