Who can have Dental Implants?

Dental Implants are without question the most scientific & long term solution for replacing missing teeth. Be it a single tooth, lost through an accident or infection, or several teeth, which may have been lost over a number of years for various reasons or a whole set of teeth, maybe lost through the effects of gum disease or neglect, dental implants can  be used to replace all of them.

There is no longer any need to be embarrassed about that missing tooth or that ‘wobbly denture’, dental implants can certainly re-build your confidence and restore your smile.

Are you a candidate for dental implants?

Missing tooth/teeth can severely influence your daily life. It can affect your general health, your appearance and your self-esteem.

You are a candidate for dental implants if-

  1. You have a Single Missing Tooth / Multiple Missing Teeth

When you lose teeth, it disturbs the interplay between teeth and bone. Gum and bone are no longer stimulated well enough due to the missing tooth, so your jaw bone along with the gums in that region start shrinking. This can weaken neighbouring teeth and allow them to shift or migrate into the available space created by the missing tooth/teeth. Teeth in the opposing jaw also start supraerupting into the gap, thus disturbing the your occlusion (arrangement of upper and lower teeth).

  1. People with Dentures

Dental implants provide several advantages over other teeth replacement options. In addition to looking and functioning like natural teeth, implant-supported full bridges or dentures are designed to be long lasting. Implant-supported full bridges and dentures also are more comfortable and stable than conventional dentures, allowing you to retain a more natural biting and chewing capacity.

In addition, because implant-supported full bridges and dentures will replace some of your tooth roots, your bone is better preserved. With conventional dentures, the bone that previously surrounded the tooth roots begins to resorb (deteriorate). Dental implants integrate with your jawbone, helping to keep the bone healthy and intact.

Who shouldn’t get a dental implant?

It is important that you are in good health before opting for dental implants.  Uncontrolled diabetes, cancer, radiation to the jaws, smoking, alcoholism, or uncontrolled periodontal (gum) disease may adversely affect the predictability & longevity of your implant treatment.

Thus, it’s important for you to inform your dental surgeon all about your medical status (past and present) together with all medications you are taking, whether prescribed, alternative (herbal) or over-the-counter.
