The plain truth is that we fear dental treatment and so we push it till the time the pain takes over. Along with this, there are a lot of word of mouth misconceptions created about dental health and a visit to the dentist.

All that you hear may not be factual. Beware of dental myths, don’t fall prey to them.

Dental Myths

Here are 6 dental myths that can kill your teeth:

Myth 1: White teeth are healthier teeth: Your teeth maybe white but this does not mean there are no infections and cavities between your teeth. Pure white teeth do not equate to healthier teeth.

Myth 2: Bleaching your teeth is dangerous: Bleaching is a service used to get whiter teeth safely. When you bleach your teeth, you simply oxidize it. Bleaching is not dangerous, but an aggressive use of whitening gels are traumatizing for your teeth. Hence, get your teeth whitened under your dentist’s supervision & guidance.

Myth 3: Brushing your bleeding gums is bad: Brushing is not only good on teeth, but also on your gums and tongue. Brushing these areas helps to get rid of plaque. Plaque if not cleaned can cause gum inflammation and bleeding.

Myth 4: Keeping aspirin next to the aching tooth will relieve pain: These home remedies don’t correct your dental problems. Putting an aspirin in direct contact with the soft tissues of your mouth can lead to painful chemical burns.

Myth 5: Bad breath is caused due to improper brushing only: Bad breath can be caused due to smoking, not rinsing the mouth after snacks and meals and poor oral hygiene. Bad breath occurs also because of indigestion, sinusitis, other respiratory infections, etc.

Myth 6: Flossing is not important: Flossing is an extra step that most of us choose to ignore but this can lead to build-up of bacteria between adjacent teeth. If we don’t floss, we don’t clean 33% of our tooth surfaces that regular brushing can’t reach.

Dental myths can misguide your oral health completely. Have faith in your dentist and do as he/ she says, that’s the way to go!
