Diabetes and Oral Care

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia) due to a total or relative lack of insulin secretion & insulin resistance or both.

  • DM is associated a reduced ability of the body to resist infections. The higher your blood sugar levels, the greater is your risk of
  • Tooth Decay (Cavities)
  • Gingivitis & Periodontitis
  • Poor wound healing
  • Dry mouth, Burning Mouth Syndrome
  • Altered taste sensation
  • Fungal infections, etc.

What happens when your blood sugar levels are not in check?

Certain forms of essential dental treatments like dental extractions, placement of dental implants, grafting procedures and other minor/major oral surgeries are not possible in cases of uncontrolled diabetes. Because of your dentist’s inability to carry out certain procedures to restore your teeth or rehabilitate your oral cavity, your chewing efficiency and in turn your digestion is compromised leading to further deterioration of your general health.

Hence, diabetics need to take extra care of their oral cavity by doing the following:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day.
  • Floss your teeth at least once a day.
  • Rinse your mouth after every meal.
  • Visit your dentist after every 3-6 months. Inform him about other relevant medical history along with your history of diabetes. Get your teeth cleaned professionally (as per his/her advice).

These habits once cultivated will not only help in maintaining your oral health, but also aid in early diagnosis and treatment of any form of oral infection/disease.

Hence, take definitive steps to keep your blood sugar levels in check & maintain your oral hygiene. Take a step forward in the right direction & make your dentist a part of your life!
